Viola player by trade! I've spent most of my life teaching children and taking string orchestras. The arrangements I've done have mainly been for groups that's I've worked with.

Saint Sains Allegro Cello and String Orchestra

Camille Saint-Saëns loved the cello composing several pieces including his Allegro appassionato, Op. 43, for cello and piano, written in 1873. The composer went on to orchestrate the work in 1876. 3 Pieces by Drdla for Violin and Piano

Summer holidays are coming to an end in Scotland and I've been looking for some new pieces for a couple of my pupils. I was looking for something a little different that would stretch their playing in first and third position as well as give their bowing arm a bit of a work out too!

After a little searching, I found three pieces by the prominent Czech concert violinist and composer František Drdla.

Night Winds Op. 127 No. 4 which is a Moto Perpetuo with lots of sautille bowing!

Tarantelle Op. 112 some strong, even finger work required for that one.

Intermezzo Op. 101 some good legato and staccato bowing with some nice and easy double stopping.

I do hope some of these pieces are useful to for you too.

Seitz Student Concerto No 3 for Violin and String Orchestra

Seitz composed eight student concertos as well as other smaller works for young violinists to test their skills on.  Concerto No.3 is in three movements which are all seamlessly joined together.

There are many student concertos that were written at the end of the 1800s and beginning the 1900s.  These works were composed to be played with piano and not orchestra.  Many arrangers have risen to the task of orchestrating the piano parts and here's my attempt...

Kreisler's Liebesfreud belongs to a set of three pieces entitled Alt-Wiener Tanzweisen. Dolb 3 Easy Concert Pieces Op 30 for Violin and Piano

Every now and again you come across a composer or a piece that you have never heard of and wonder why don't I know about this?  Well, for me, that doesn't happen all that often and I run a website that is full of obscure music and composers!

I came across Wilhel Dölb a short while ago with a set of two pieces Op. 44 for Violin and Piano. I can't find anything about him other than he lived in  Book between 1892 and 1904 and his son was born in 1892.

His 3 Easy Concert Pieces Op. 30 certainly do deserve to be played.  The opening Idylle is a charming piece that is playable in first and has some varied bowing patterns.

The Capriccietto has some good off the string bowing to get to grips with.

The Petite Gavotte is full of character and a little bit cheeky...

I do hope they will find their way into your repertoire.

Bull The Herdgirl s Sunday for Cello Octet

"Profound expression, a true feeling for melody, natural elegance of style, and much warmth and originality". That was Berlioz impression of Ole bull as a musician.

The Herdgirl’s Sunday or Sæterjentens Søndag is a fine example of Bull's ability to write a good tune.  This arrangement for cello octet takes Johan Svendsen violin and orchestra version as a starting point.
