Aubert Overture for String Orchestra

Jacques Aubert, also known as Jacques Aubert le Vieux was a composer and violinist of note. As a violinist, he was a member of the Les Vingt-quatre Violons du Roi  -"The King's 24 Violins".  This ensemble was originally founded in 1626 by Louis XIII and was made up of players that had an impeccable reputation and had to be Roman Catholic.

Aubert was a member of this ensemble from 1728 to 1752, as well as being the first violinist at the Paris Opéra.

Aubert composed several instrumental works as well as operas and ballets.  This Overture is taken from his 5th Suite and is a good example of Aubert's style.

It is scored for two violins, cello and harpsichord.

Sibelius Romance Op. 78 No. 2 for Violin and String Orchestra

It was always been common practice for composers to write smaller works as a means of increasing their income.  Sibelius was now different from many of his contemporary and composed a wide range of salon pieces.  Most of these were composed for the piano or violin and piano.  When asked by his daughter Katarina why he composed these small pieces, when he should be writing great works, he replied, "To provide you with bread and butter."

In 1915 Sibelius composed his four Pieces for violin and piano, Op.78.   This Romance is the second of these pieces and was also published for cello and piano.

We must remember that Sibelius was a violinist! Sibelius was 50 in 1915 and in his diary he famously admitted of "Dreaming of being twelve years old and a violin virtuoso".  This Romance is far from being a virtuoso piece but it is filled with charm.

Tessarini's Allettamenti Armonici consist of 6 sinfonias for string orchestra.  The first of these is in D minor and is in three movements - Allegro - Andante - Presto.

Danse macabre, Op. 40 was composed in 1874 by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns. It started out song for voice and piano based on an old French superstition of "Death" appearing at midnight every year at Halloween.
