Monsigny Rigaudon for String Orchestra

Monsigny was a French composer and a member of the French Académie des Beaux-Arts (1813).

He is considered alongside André Grétry and François-André Danican Philidor to have been the founder of a new musical genre, the opéra comique, laying a path for other French composers such as François-Adrien Boieldieu, Daniel-François-Esprit Auber, Charles Gounod, Georges Bizet, and Jules Massenet in this genre.

This fine Rigaudon was taken from Monsigny's comic opera "La Reine de Golconde".  I like this work as it gives the string players an opportunity to play in E major! Get stretching those fingers...

Rachmaninoff Vocalise for Cello and String Orchestra

Vocalise, Op. 34, No. 14 is a song by Sergei Rachmaninoff, composed and published in 1915 as the last of his "Fourteen Songs", Op. 34. Written for high voice (soprano or tenor) with piano accompaniment, it contains no words, but is sung using any one vowel (of the singer's choosing). It was dedicated to soprano Antonina Nezhdanova.

Valentini Concerto Grosso Op. 7 No. 11

Giuseppe Valentini (1681 – 1753), nicknamed Straccioncino (Little Ragamuffin), was an Italian violinist, painter, poet, and composer, though he is known chiefly as a composer of inventive instrumental music.

He composed his 12 Concerti Grossi Op.7 in 1710.

Op.7 No.11 is composed for 4 violins, viola and cello. It is in 8 movements.

Mollenhauer The Boy Paganini for Violin and String Orchestra

Mollenhauer had the pleasure of having both Ernst and Spohr as a violin teacher. He moved to the London and the on to The US where he was a frequent soloist with the New York Philharmonic. He composed two violin concertos, 3 symphonies a couple of quartets and several works for violin and piano. The Infant Paganini is a great piece for the intermediate violinist and always goes down well at concerts.

Vivaldi Cello Concerto In D RV403 for Cello and String Orchestra

There are not many cello concertos composed in the baroque era.  Vivaldi, is one exception to this rule having composed several cello concertos. 

Vivaldi composed this concerto around 1730.  It is in three movements Allegro, Andante and Allegro.

Geminiani Concerto Grosso Op.3 No.3 for String Orchestra

Geminiani published his concerti grossi Opus 2 and 3 in 1732 while teaching and performing in London.  The Concerto Grosso Op.3 No.3 starts with an Adagio intro leading in to a contrapuntal Allegro. It is scored for 2 solo violins, solo cello plus strings.
