Rieding Concerto Op 36 for Violin and Piano

As a teacher, I tend to use Rieding's Concerto Op.35 with pupils.  The opus 35 concerto if such a great play that I think the opus 36 concerto can get a little overlooked.

The opus 36 in D major can all be played in the first position. I particularly like the second movement, such a lovely opening.  The last movement zips along nicely with the need of some secure bowing.

Vivaldi Violin Concerto Op.3 No.6 for Violin and Piano

The 12 concerti that make up L'estro Armonico were composed in 1711.  The A minor violin concerto Op. 3 No.6 is possibly the first Vivaldi concerto that violinist learn, I know it was mine!

As a teacher, I use this concerto with just about all my pupils at some point.  It makes a good piece to play  for a concert, audition or festival.  One of the problems with this though is not the violin part but the piano part.  If the pianist has to sight-read the piano part, (especially the Suzuki version) it can be tricky in places.  I've been meaning to do a simplified piano part for years and after a near mishap recently I decided t was about time.

I've tried to keep the left hand as close to the cello line as possible and make an easier, stripped down right had.

Let me know what you think!

Kreisler Liebesleid for Violin and String Orchestra

Kreisler's Liebesleid was composed along with two other "Old Viennese Dances" - Liebesfreud and Schön Rosmarin.  These three pieces have been the staple diet of violinists since they were composed in 1910.  Originally Kreisler published these three Dances as arrangements of pieces by Josef Lanner (1801 — 1843) but confessed to being the composer of these works after a reviewer told him off for playing some of his own works alongside "these pearls composed by Lanner".

Here is an arrangement of Liebesleid for violin and string orchestra.  I've added a little for bar introduction to "set the mood" but it can be omitted!

Dolb 2 Pieces Op 44 for Violin and Piano

Every now and again you come across a composer or a piece that you have never heard of and wonder why don't I know about this?  Well, for me, that doesn't happen all that often and I run a website that is full of obscure music and composers!

The other day I came across Wilhel Dölb. I can't find anything about him other than he lived in  Book between 1892 and 1904 and his son was born in 1892.

His 2 Pieces Op. 44 certainly do deserve to be played.  The opening Sicilianisches Ständchen is a charming piece that will put a smile on anyone's face and is playable in first and third position.

The Belero is a well-balanced piece to the Sicilianisches Ständchen.  Full of wit and a bit of fire.

The two pieces together take around 5 minutes to play and would certainly be a good concert item.

Valentini Concerto for 2 Violins in D major

Imagine having the nicknamed Straccioncino (Little Ragamuffin)? Well, that's what Valentini had to put up with!  Valentini, (14 December 1681 – November 1753) was an accomplished violinist, painter and poet though he is remembered the most for being a composer.

From 1710 to 1727 he served as ‘Suonator di Violino, e Componitore di Musica’ to Prince Michelangelo Caetani. When we think of baroque composers we think of Bach, Corelli, Handel and Vivaldi but we have to remember that Valentini succeeded Corelli as director of the concertino at San Luigi dei Francesi, so he had to be good!

I like Valentini, his music is bright, cheerful and is a delight to play.  I've done a few pieces now by Valentini already, his Bizzarria Per Camera Op.2 No.1; Concerto for 4 violins Op.7 No.11 and a Violin Concerto.

This Concerto for 2 Violins in D major is in 4 Movements Slow-Fast-Slow -Fast.

Sibelius Romance Op. 78 No. 2 for Violin and String Orchestra

It was always been common practice for composers to write smaller works as a means of increasing their income.  Sibelius was now different from many of his contemporary and composed a wide range of salon pieces.  Most of these were composed for the piano or violin and piano.  When asked by his daughter Katarina why he composed these small pieces, when he should be writing great works, he replied, "To provide you with bread and butter."

In 1915 Sibelius composed his four Pieces for violin and piano, Op.78.   This Romance is the second of these pieces and was also published for cello and piano.

We must remember that Sibelius was a violinist! Sibelius was 50 in 1915 and in his diary he famously admitted of "Dreaming of being twelve years old and a violin virtuoso".  This Romance is far from being a virtuoso piece but it is filled with charm.

Bohm Perpetuo Mobile for Violin and Piano

I like the music of Carl Bohm! My pupils like the music of Carl Bohm!  His publisher Simrock loved the music of Carl Bohm too as they made a small fortune from his compositions.  It is said that Simrock used the profits from Bohm to provide the capital to publish music by Brahms.

It is amazing to think that Bohm is not really known much today outside the world of violin teachers and young aspiring violinists.  Yet without him would we have had the music from Brahms?

Here is a delightful Perpetuo Mobile from a set of six small pieces.  I'm sorry, I don't know if there is an opus number to them!  This piece starts as it means to go on - fast.  Having said that, it is mainly played in first position with the odd bit of third position here and there.

I hope you enjoy.
