Vanhal Theme and Variations for Viola and Piano

On May 12, 1739, Vanhal was born into serfdom in Nechanice, Bohemia!  He learnt music from his family, friends and local musicians and went on to become a wealthy composer.  He composed over 100 string quartets and 73 symphonies.  Haydn much admired Vanhal's symphonies which were played as far away as America.

Vanhal made his money also by composing music for the newly emerging middle classes.  However, the music he composed for the middle classes is now seen as being over simplistic and that it took him away from developing his compositions.

The theme and variations were originally for cello but it also works on viola too!

I hope you enjoy.

Sibelius Romance Op. 78 No. 2 for Violin and String Orchestra

It was always been common practice for composers to write smaller works as a means of increasing their income.  Sibelius was now different from many of his contemporary and composed a wide range of salon pieces.  Most of these were composed for the piano or violin and piano.  When asked by his daughter Katarina why he composed these small pieces, when he should be writing great works, he replied, "To provide you with bread and butter."

In 1915 Sibelius composed his four Pieces for violin and piano, Op.78.   This Romance is the second of these pieces and was also published for cello and piano.

We must remember that Sibelius was a violinist! Sibelius was 50 in 1915 and in his diary he famously admitted of "Dreaming of being twelve years old and a violin virtuoso".  This Romance is far from being a virtuoso piece but it is filled with charm.

Bohm Perpetuo Mobile for Violin and Piano

I like the music of Carl Bohm! My pupils like the music of Carl Bohm!  His publisher Simrock loved the music of Carl Bohm too as they made a small fortune from his compositions.  It is said that Simrock used the profits from Bohm to provide the capital to publish music by Brahms.

It is amazing to think that Bohm is not really known much today outside the world of violin teachers and young aspiring violinists.  Yet without him would we have had the music from Brahms?

Here is a delightful Perpetuo Mobile from a set of six small pieces.  I'm sorry, I don't know if there is an opus number to them!  This piece starts as it means to go on - fast.  Having said that, it is mainly played in first position with the odd bit of third position here and there.

I hope you enjoy.

Tessarini Aletamento Armonici No 1 for String Orchestra

Carlo Tessarini was born in Rimini in 1690.   His exact date of birth is not known.  In 1716, the German composer and violinist Pisendel came across some of his violin concertos.  Some of these concertos later were published  by Le Cene and Walsh as part of his 12 Concerti Opus 1 set.

Tessarini's Allettamenti Armonici consist of 6 sinfonias for string orchestra.  The first of these is in D minor and is in three movements - Allegro - Andante - Presto.

Saint Saens Dance Macabre for String Orchestra

Danse macabre, Op. 40 was composed in 1874 by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns. It started out song for voice and piano based on an old French superstition of "Death" appearing at midnight every year at Halloween.

Saint-Saëns expanded and reworked the piece into a tone poem, replacing the vocal line with a solo violin.

Saint-Saens Romance Op. 36 for Cello and String Orchestra

Composed in 1874 for either Horn or cello and piano. Saint-Saens later orchestrated it. Here is an arrangement for cello and string orchestra.

I found this beautiful performance on YouTube of  Saint-Saens Romance Op. 36 for Cello and Orchestra by cellist William Molina Cestari.

Benes Rondoletto for Violin and Piano

Benes Rondoletto for Violin and Piano

I can't find out a great deal about Benes!  What I do know is that this Rondoletto is a really good piece.  It is all playable in first position, has a catchy tune and has a couple of triplet passages that lay well under the fingers of a young violinist.  It will be one piece that I'll be adding to my teaching list.  Hope it's helpful.
