Scarlatti Sonata K.286 for String Trio

Domenico Scarlatti spent much of his life in the service of the Portuguese and Spanish royal families. He is classified as a Baroque composer chronologically, although his music was influential in the development of the Classical style. Like his renowned father Alessandro Scarlatti he composed in a variety of musical forms, although today he is known mainly for his 555 keyboard sonatas.

This sonata, K. 286 is originally in A major.  I thought it worked better transposed down to G major for strings.  Hope it is of some use.

Kuula Chanson sans paroles Op.22/1a - Joululaulu for viola and piano

In 1909, Kuula became Jean Sibelius's first composition student. He is best remembered for his large output of melodic choir and vocal works.  His instrumental works include two Ostrobothnian Suites for orchestra, a violin sonata, a piano trio, and an unfinished Symphony.

This Chanson sans paroles Op.22/1a - Joululaulu was orginally composed for violin or cello and piano.  It's such a lovely piece that I thought a version for viola was needed!

Bull The Spanish Pavan for Cello Quartet

The Spanish Pavan comes from a collection of keyboard pieces from the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. Originally this collection of pieces was given no title by its copyist.  The ownership of the manuscript before the eighteenth century is also unclear. At the time the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book was put together most collections of keyboard music were compiled by performers: other examples include Will Forster's Virginal Book, Clement Matchett's Virginal Book, and Anne Cromwell's Virginal Book.

The Spanish Pavan comes from book 2 and is arranged here for cello quartet.

Croft 6 Sonatas Op.3 for 2 Violas

Croft 6 Sonatas Op.3 for 2 Violas

William Croft was born at the Manor House, Nether Ettington, Warwickshire. He was educated at the Chapel Royal, under the instruction of John Blow, and remained there until 1698.  Croft's main output was religious music but he also wrote various violin sonatas, which are not nearly as often performed as his religious music.  Here are 6 Sonatas arranged for viola duet, originally set for two treble parts.

Saint-Saëns Swan for Cello and String Orchestra

This is the only movement from The Carnival of the Animals that the composer allowed to be played in public during his lifetime. He thought the remaining movements were too frivolous and would damage his reputation as a serious composer. Here is an arrangement for cello and string orchestra.

Kuchler Concertino in G Major for Violin and String Orchestra

Nearly all of Kuchler's compositions were for the benefit of the young violinist.  It takes a special person to spend their creative life thinking about preparing the next generation of artists - I think Kuchler was such a man!  Here is an arrangement of his Concertino Op. 11 for Violin and String Orchestra.

Tartini Sinfonia for String Orchestra

Tartini Sinfonia for String Orchestra

Almost all of Tartini's works are violin concerti (at least 135) and violin sonatas. However there are a few other works as well.  Tartini's music is problematic to scholars and editors because Tartini never dated his manuscripts, and he also revised works that had been published or even finished years before, making it difficult to determine when a work was written, when it was revised and what the extent of those revisions were.

Here is a three movement Sinfonia by Tartini.  It is in three movements Allegro - Andantino - Allegro

Mollenhauer The Infant Paganini for Violin and Piano

Mollenhauer had the pleasure of having both Ernst and Spohr as a violin teacher.  He moved to the London and the on to The US where he was a frequent soloist with the New York Philharmonic.

He composed two violin concertos, 3 symphonies a couple of quartets and several works for violin and piano.

The Infant Paganini is a great piece for the intermediate violinist and always goes down well at concerts.
