Martino Bitti (1656–1743) was an Italian violinist and composer who spent much of his career in the service of the Medici court in Florence, one of the most important centres of musical patronage in early eighteenth-century Italy. His sonatas for violin sit firmly within the tradition shaped by Corelli, combining expressive slow movements with accomplished passagework that makes them well suited to recital and examination programmes. His remarkably long life, spanning eighty-seven years and bridging the high Baroque and the early Classical era, places him as an unusual connecting figure in the Italian violin school.
