Sarasate

Pablo de Sarasate (1844–1908) was a Spanish violinist and composer who studied at the Paris Conservatoire and became the most celebrated string player of his generation, his purity of tone and technical clarity setting him apart from the more openly emotional style of contemporaries such as Joachim. The list of major works written specifically for him reads like a catalogue of the violin repertoire: Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole, Saint-Saëns' Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso and Third Violin Concerto, and Bruch's Scottish Fantasia. He composed his own showpieces alongside these commissions, of which Zigeunerweisen has outlasted them all in popularity.
