Sarasate Playera Op. 23 No. 1 for Solo Violin and Violin Quartet
Here's the rewrite, same format as the Caprice Basque:
Sarasate's Playera, Op. 23 No. 1 is one of the most immediately expressive pieces in the Spanish Dances: a slow, deeply lyrical miniature built around a melody that sits beautifully on the violin and leaves the player very little room to hide. This arrangement sets the original solo violin line against a supporting violin quartet, and like the Caprice Basque arrangement, it came about through a commission.
The quartet's role here is different from the Caprice Basque. Rather than sharing virtuosic material equally across four parts, the quartet provides the harmonic and rhythmic foundation while the soloist carries the melodic argument throughout. The quartet writing distributes the original piano accompaniment across four voices, which requires careful ensemble balance and dynamic sensitivity: four violins can easily swamp a solo line if the players aren't listening closely.
At Grade 8, the solo part asks for mature tone production and real expressive control. The melody is almost entirely the focus, so the demands are musical as much as technical: sustained cantabile playing, a well-developed vibrato, and the ability to shape long phrases with conviction across Sarasate's characteristic Andalusian character.
At five minutes, it makes a natural lyrical contrast piece in a programme alongside more energetic or technically demanding works.

This suits advanced student and professional violinists looking for a lyrical recital piece with a chamber ensemble rather than piano accompaniment. It works well in violin ensemble concerts and chamber music programmes where something expressive and immediately appealing is needed alongside more virtuosic repertoire.
