Locatelli
Pietro Antonio Locatelli (1695–1764) was an Italian violinist and composer who studied under Corelli in Rome before settling permanently in Amsterdam in 1729, where he spent the remaining thirty-five years of his life teaching and giving private concerts. His collection L'Arte del violino, published in 1733, contained twelve concertos each paired with a caprice of such extreme technical difficulty that they were largely beyond the reach of any contemporary player; in pushing violin technique to these limits he prefigured Paganini by half a century. His concerti grossi and solo concertos offer rather more accessible pleasures and remain a valuable resource for string ensembles.
