Locatelli Introduzione Teatrale Op. 4 No. 1
Locatelli gave the Op. 4 collection its title deliberately: "Introduzioni Teatrali" means theatrical introductions, and these pieces were designed to open a performance with a sense of occasion and set an expectant tone before the main event. This one, in D major, brings the brightness and energy associated with that key in Baroque music: festive, direct, and built to command attention from the first bar. This new edition, prepared from the original score, includes a fully realised harpsichord continuo part.
At seven minutes, the piece is more substantial than many Baroque overtures of the period, and it uses the time well through variety of texture and character across its movements. Locatelli was a pupil of Corelli and spent much of his career in Amsterdam, and his orchestral writing reflects both the Italian Baroque tradition and a particular sense of theatrical timing: knowing when to drive forward and when to create space. The string writing is idiomatic throughout, and the ensemble needs to commit to the theatrical character of the opening to make the piece land as intended.
Paul Wood has prepared this edition directly from the original score, with clean, accurate engraving and a continuo realisation that works in performance and is practical for a modern harpsichordist to sight-read. The length suits a programme opener well: substantial enough to make a real impression, compact enough not to overstay the welcome before the main repertoire begins.

Who it's for
This suits chamber and school orchestras looking for Baroque repertoire with real theatrical energy and presence. It's a natural concert opener, and it offers something distinct from the more familiar Vivaldi and Handel repertoire that tends to dominate Baroque programmes.
