Jansa

Leopold Jansa (1795–1875) was a Bohemian violinist and composer who built his career in Vienna, teaching at the university and moving in the circles of Beethoven and Schubert. His life took a sharp turn when the Austrian authorities banned him from the empire after he played at a London benefit concert for Hungarian refugees from the 1848 revolution. He spent the following decade in London teaching and performing before a pardon allowed him to return to Vienna. His compositions for violin — concertos, quartets, and a large body of shorter pieces — remain a useful resource for players and teachers working in the Viennese Classical tradition.
