François Schubert L' Abeille for Violin and Piano
Not Franz Schubert. François Schubert was a German violinist and composer, considerably less famous than his near-namesake, and L'Abeille is by some distance his best-known piece. It's a minute of continuous triplets, buzzing along like the bee of its title, and it asks for nothing except that everything stays even, controlled, and in time from start to finish.
The technical challenge is consistency. The whole piece is a moto perpetuo in triplets, and the demands are specific: even fingers, a reliable bow arm, and the coordination between the two that keeps the articulation clean throughout. At a comfortable tempo this sits at Grade 7; push it to performance speed and it earns its Grade 8. The grade, in other words, is partly a question of how fast you dare go.
This is a new edition of the original violin and piano version, prepared by Paul Wood from the original score. The piano part is light and supportive, leaving the violin to carry the piece.
Key features:
- Violin and piano; original instrumentation
- ABRSM Grade 7-8 depending on tempo; duration approx. 1 minute
- Triplet moto perpetuo throughout: finger evenness and bow-arm coordination are the central demands
- New edition by Paul Wood from the original score
- Straightforward piano accompaniment
Who it's for: Grade 7-8 violinists preparing for examinations, recitals, or competitions; teachers looking for a short, technically focused piece that also works well as an encore.
