Jansa
Leopold Jansa (1795-1875) was a prominent Austrian violinist, composer, and teacher. Born in Ústí nad Orlicí (present-day Czech Republic), he studied violin as a child and later composition in Vienna with Jan Václav Voříšek and Emanuel Förster. A celebrated violinist, Jansa performed in the Braunschweig orchestra and the Vienna Court Orchestra, eventually leading the renowned Schuppanzigh Quartet. He was also a dedicated teacher at the University of Vienna and the Vienna Conservatory, counting Wilma Neruda among his pupils. Jansa composed prolifically, creating string quartets, violin concertos, and chamber music characterized by melodic charm and elegance. His career in Vienna was interrupted after supporting the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, leading to a period in London. Upon his pardon in 1868, he returned to Vienna, leaving behind a legacy as a significant figure in 19th-century Viennese musical life.
