Intermediate Repertoire (ABRSM Grades 5–6)
Welcome to our Intermediate Repertoire for ABRSM Grades 5–6 (equivalent to US Grades 3.5–4 or Suzuki Books 4–5). This is a thrilling stage in a string player's development—you're no longer a beginner, but you're building toward the advanced repertoire that defines serious musicianship. The concertos and solo works in this collection reflect that exciting transition, offering substantial pieces that demand both technical facility and musical maturity.
String players at this intermediate level command considerable instrumental command. Repertoire in this collection features extensive position work (third through fifth positions), comfortable position changes, and passages that require fluent navigation across the fingerboard. Keys extend to four sharps or four flats, with confident handling of both major and minor tonalities and more complex harmonic progressions. Students encounter sophisticated rhythmic patterns including syncopation, mixed meters, and intricate subdivision. Vibrato should be well-established by this stage, used expressively as a tool for phrasing and emotional communication rather than mere decoration. Bowing techniques expand to include spiccato, sautillé, rapid string crossings, and the sophisticated dynamic control that characterises artistic performance.
These intermediate pieces represent a significant milestone in musical development. They bridge the gap between pedagogical studies and standard concert repertoire, introducing students to the musical architecture and interpretive demands of professional performance whilst remaining technically accessible. These works are ideal for youth orchestra auditions, scholarship assessments, music school applications, and Grades 5–6 examination programs. They're substantial enough—often spanning 10–20 minutes—to feature prominently in public recitals, competitions, and formal concerts.
Our collection includes beloved intermediate concertos and movements by Eccles, Goltermann, Potstock, and Romantic composers, alongside lyrical showpieces that display both technical command and musical depth, and character pieces that introduce students to different musical styles and performance traditions. Each arrangement honors the original whilst ensuring compatibility with string orchestra forces and accessibility for Grades 5–6 players.
Whether you're preparing for a major examination, planning a recital, seeking audition repertoire, or simply looking for music that will challenge your abilities and reward dedicated practice, you'll find professional-quality arrangements across violin, viola, and cello. All scores are instant PDF downloads with full string orchestra parts included. No performance licence required.
