Early Intermediate Repertoire (ABRSM Grades 3–4)
Welcome to our Early Intermediate Repertoire for ABRSM Grades 3–4 (equivalent to US Grades 2.5–3 or Suzuki Book 3). This collection marks an exciting transition as string players move beyond beginner studies to explore more expressive, technically varied repertoire. At this pivotal stage, musicians develop their individual voice and begin to tackle pieces that showcase their emerging artistry and growing technical command.
Players at the early intermediate level are expanding their capabilities significantly. Repertoire in this collection introduces position changes (typically to third position), explores keys up to three sharps or three flats in both major and minor modes, and features more sophisticated rhythmic patterns including triplets, dotted rhythms, and compound meters. This is also when many students begin developing vibrato, adding warmth and expression to sustained notes. Bowing techniques become more varied with string crossings, different articulations, and more complex slur patterns that demand greater bow control.
These early intermediate pieces serve as crucial stepping stones in a string player's development. They bridge the gap between simple beginner pieces and the substantial intermediate repertoire that lies ahead, providing technical challenges that stretch abilities without overwhelming, and offering musical substance that rewards interpretive exploration and personal expression. These works are ideal for school orchestra soloists, youth ensemble features, and Grades 3–4 examination programs.
Our collection features beloved pedagogical concertos by composers like Seitz, , Portnoff and Rieding, alongside lyrical arrangements that showcase emerging expressiveness and accessible Baroque and Classical movements that introduce stylistic variety. Each piece has been carefully arranged to honour the musical integrity of the original whilst ensuring the technical demands remain appropriate and achievable for Grades 3–4 players across violin, viola, and cello.
Whether you're a teacher seeking fresh examination repertoire, a student preparing for a festival or competition, or an orchestra director featuring your developing soloists, you'll find professional arrangements that challenge and inspire. All scores are available as instant PDF downloads with complete string orchestra parts included. No performance licence required.
