Beach Romance Op 23 for Viola and String Orchestra
Amy Beach's Romance Op. 23 sits naturally on the viola. The instrument's characteristic sound, that rich, slightly dark quality in the middle register, suits Beach's late Romantic writing particularly well, and the arrangement in the original key of A major keeps the melodic lines in a range where the viola speaks most fully. Originally for violin and piano, the work has been transcribed here for viola solo with the piano accompaniment expanded into a string orchestra.
The transcription works carefully through the viola's register, making use of the instrument's warmth in the lower and middle strings and the more penetrating, focused quality it has higher up, without pushing into the upper positions where the viola can feel cramped. The goal throughout was to let the melody and passage work sing naturally rather than sit awkwardly on an instrument they weren't written for. The viola's own sound qualities bring something to this music that a violin wouldn't. The string orchestra accompaniment is built from Beach's piano original, with the harmonic structure preserved and the textures rewritten for strings, always keeping the solo viola at the front.
At Grade 8 the demands are primarily expressive: sustained tone, lyrical shaping across a wide dynamic range, and the musical depth the music genuinely requires. Beach (1867–1944) was a serious composer, and the Romance repays serious playing.
Six minutes is a well-proportioned length for a recital piece at this level, substantial enough to carry real weight in a programme and contained enough to sit alongside other works without dominating.

Who it's for
This suits advanced student and semi-professional violists looking for a distinctive late Romantic piece with real musical substance. It works well in senior recitals, conservatoire programmes, and concert programmes where something expressive and less familiar is needed. For violists specifically, it's a welcome addition to a solo repertoire that has fewer options than violin or cello at this level, and the characteristic sound of the viola gives the Romance a particular quality that is worth hearing in its own right.
