De Bériot: Violin Concerto No. 7 in G major, Op. 76 — 1st Movement (Arr. String Orchestra)

Charles-Auguste de Bériot (1802–1870) was one of the central figures of the Franco-Belgian violin school, and his concertos remain among the finest repertoire for soloists taking on their first serious Romantic concerto. The Seventh, dedicated to King William III of the Netherlands, is a work of real charm and brilliance — yet it sits almost entirely in the shadow of the far better-known Concerto No. 9.

This edition presents the first movement in an arrangement for solo violin and string orchestra, worked directly from de Bériot's original orchestral score rather than from a piano reduction. Because the original concerto moves without a break between movements, a new ending has been composed in de Bériot's own style, bringing the first movement to a convincing close so it can stand alone as a complete concert piece.

The solo part is at Diploma or professional standard: the writing demands confident bow control, fluent passage-work across the upper positions, and a singing cantabile tone in the lyrical sections. The orchestra parts are well within reach of a strong youth or amateur string ensemble, with clear, rehearsal-ready engraving throughout.

Who it's for

This arrangement works particularly well for advanced soloists looking for impressive, lesser-known Romantic concerto repertoire at Diploma level; for youth or community orchestras wanting a proper virtuoso showcase without overstretching the string section; and for exam or competition programmes where a distinctive first movement will stand out from the standard repertoire.

The first movement is packed with brilliant passage-work, lyrical writing, and the kind of clean Romantic virtuosity that plays well to an audience. This edition originated from a customer request and brings the work into the string orchestra world for the first time.
