Paganini: Moto Perpetuo Op. 11 for Solo Violin and String Orchestra

Moto Perpetuo means perpetual motion, and Paganini means exactly that: the solo violin plays continuous semiquavers from the first bar to the last, with virtually no let-up for five or six minutes, depending on how fast the soloist is prepared to go. Originally written for violin and orchestra, this arrangement gives the solo line a string orchestra accompaniment.

There is essentially one technical challenge in this piece, and it runs the entire length of the work. The bow has to keep moving fast, evenly, and cleanly for the full duration; the left hand has to stay accurate at high speed; and the overall sound has to stay musical rather than mechanical. Getting all three to hold together for five or six minutes straight is the test. The tempo is partly a question of preference and partly a question of honesty: the piece sounds impressive at any reasonable speed, and the soloists who push too hard tend to find that clarity is the first thing to go.

At five to six minutes, it's compact enough to work as an encore and substantial enough to stand as a concert item. Even audiences who don't play the violin understand exactly what they're watching, which is part of why it works as well as it does.

Who it's for

This is repertoire for professional soloists and conservatoire students at diploma level with the bow technique and stamina to sustain it convincingly at speed. It works well as a concert showpiece or encore where the combination of brief duration and immediate impact makes the most of what the piece does.
