Popper Hungarian Rhapsody Op. 68 for Cello and String Orchestra
Popper: Hungarian Rhapsody, Op. 68 (Arr. Cello and String Orchestra)
The Hungarian Rhapsody is Popper's most substantial and emotionally wide-ranging cello showpiece. It follows the rhapsodic lassan-friss structure of the Hungarian tradition: a slow, melancholic opening built on free rubato and singing, ornate melodic lines, and a fast finale of considerable brilliance and intensity. The two sections make completely different demands on the soloist, and carrying both off convincingly within seven minutes requires full technical and interpretive command of the instrument. This arrangement takes Popper's original full-orchestral version and reduces the accompaniment to string orchestra.
The string orchestra carries a particularly varied role in this arrangement. The lassan needs sustained harmonic support that can breathe with the soloist's rubato without anchoring the pulse too firmly, while the friss demands rhythmic drive and energy that the orchestra would normally draw on winds and brass to provide. The orchestration draws directly on Popper's original, adapted to give the string sections the weight and colour the work requires.
The solo part is at Diploma or Professional standard throughout, but the two sections test different things. The slow opening asks for expressive maturity: a deep, singing tone, stylistically informed ornaments, and the confidence to shape long phrases freely without losing musical direction. The fast finale asks for brilliant, clean technique at high speed and the rhythmic fire the Hungarian idiom demands. Neither section is forgiving, and the contrast between them is the whole point of the piece.

Who it's for
This suits professional and conservatoire recitals where a high-impact, emotionally varied showpiece is needed. The rhapsodic structure gives it more dramatic scope than most salon pieces, and the Hungarian idiom makes it a distinctive choice alongside standard concerto repertoire. It also works well for advanced amateur or professional orchestras looking for a solo cello vehicle that doesn't require a full wind section.
