Tchaikovsky Melodie Op. 42 No. 3 for Violin and String Orchestra
Tchaikovsky: Mélodie Op. 42 No. 3 for Solo Violin and String Orchestra
The Mélodie is the third of three pieces Tchaikovsky wrote for violin and piano in 1878, collected as Souvenir d'un lieu cher (Memory of a dear place). It does what its title says: three minutes of singing violin line, supported by a simple harmonic framework, with almost nothing else. Glazunov later orchestrated it for full orchestra, but this arrangement gives the solo violin a string orchestra accompaniment, which preserves the warmth of the original without the weight of a full wind section.
At Diploma or Professional level, three minutes of pure melody is a particular kind of test. There's no technical complexity to hide behind, no passage work to demonstrate command: the solo line has to sing from the first bar to the last, with a quality of tone and a naturalness of phrasing that makes the whole thing sound inevitable. Tchaikovsky's melody rises and falls in long arcs, and the player's job is to shape those arcs consistently without ever sounding calculated. It asks for the kind of playing that is hard to teach but immediately recognisable when it's there.
Short enough for an encore, long enough to make a real impression: at three minutes, it's a piece that earns its place without demanding much room in a programme.

Who it's for
This works well as an encore in professional and conservatoire recitals, and it's a natural choice for weddings and formal events where something short and immediately affecting is needed. It also pairs naturally in a Russian Romantic programme alongside the Sérénade mélancolique Op. 26 or other Tchaikovsky works for violin.
