Vivaldi Concerto in G minor RV 531 for 2 Cellos and String Orchestra
Vivaldi: Concerto in G minor, RV 531 for 2 Cellos and String Orchestra (with Realised Harpsichord Part)
Vivaldi's Concerto in G minor, RV 531, is the most frequently performed of his concertos for two cellos, and it's easy to hear why: the two soloists are in near-constant dialogue, pushing and chasing each other through the outer movements and sharing a long singing line in the central Largo. Written during his years at the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice, it has Vivaldi's characteristic rhythmic drive and clear formal structure — qualities that make it one of the most satisfying double concertos in the Baroque repertoire for ensemble and soloists alike.
This is a new edition prepared from Vivaldi's original score rather than an arrangement: the orchestral writing is Vivaldi's own, and both cello solo parts are taken directly from the source. The distinguishing feature of this edition is the realised harpsichord continuo part. Vivaldi's score, like virtually all Baroque concertos, includes a figured bass line — shorthand that tells a harpsichordist what harmonies to fill in, leaving the detail to the player's own judgement. Here that figuring has been worked out in full, giving any competent harpsichordist a complete written part to read from without needing to improvise a realisation in rehearsal. It makes the whole ensemble preparation considerably more straightforward.
The two solo parts sit at around Grade 8 — demanding in terms of ensemble co-ordination, bow speed, and rhythmic precision, but within reach of capable players who have a secure technique and a feel for Baroque articulation. The orchestral parts are less demanding: rhythmically clear and harmonically straightforward, well within intermediate ability. At eight minutes across three movements, it's a substantial concert piece that moves quickly and holds the audience's attention throughout.
