Vivaldi: Concerto in G major, Op. 3 No. 3, RV 310 (Violin and String Orchestra)

Op. 3 No. 3 is the G major single-violin concerto in L'Estro Armonico. G major sits naturally on the violin: the open strings ring freely through the outer movements, and the lower register of the instrument has real body and warmth in this key that higher-key concertos don't always allow. At around Grade 6, it is one of the more approachable works in the set and a good choice for student soloists coming to Baroque concerto playing for the first time.

This is a new edition prepared from the original score, with a fully realised harpsichord continuo part. A properly worked-out harpsichord part completes the harmonic texture Vivaldi intended and makes a real difference to how the ensemble sounds in rehearsal and performance.

The solo part sits at around ABRSM Grade 6 in terms of the notes, and the G major key is an asset here: the natural resonance of the open strings means the slow movement has a warmth that is easier to find than in the minor-key concertos at the same level. The real work, as always in Baroque concerto playing, is in the style: clean bow strokes, restrained phrasing, and a slow movement that requires sustained singing tone without the expressive habits of later repertoire. For a student who has the technical level but hasn't worked seriously in the Baroque idiom before, that is where preparation time will be spent.

At six minutes across three movements, it programmes well for student recitals and school or chamber concerts.

Who it's for

This suits student soloists at around Grade 6 who are beginning to work on Baroque concerto style, particularly where a key that sits well on the instrument can help a student find their tone. For programmes that already include the A minor Op. 3 No. 6, this provides a natural major-key companion at the same difficulty level. The continuo realisation makes it practical for any ensemble with a keyboard player, and the three-movement structure suits it for student recitals, school concerts, and mixed-period programmes.
