Goltermann Adagio Op 83 for Cello & String Orchestra
Goltermann: Adagio from Cello Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 83 (Arr. Solo Cello and String Orchestra)
The slow movement of Goltermann's Fourth Cello Concerto is demanding to play well at Grade 7 precisely because it asks for so little that is obviously difficult. The tempo is slow, the melody is long and sustained, and there is nowhere to hide. Vibrato needs to be consistent through shifts and string crossings. Managing the bow across the longer phrases is the central challenge: keeping the sound rich and even as the bow moves very slowly.
Arranged for string orchestra, it gives a young cellist the experience of carrying a sustained expressive line over an ensemble, which is quite different from playing with a piano. At seven minutes, it's a substantial slow movement that works well as a concert piece or a serious study in lyrical playing.
