Goltermann's Cello Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 65 has been a first concerto for advancing cellists for well over a century. It's sometimes called the "Student's Concerto," and the nickname fits: the piece gives a player at around ABRSM Grade 8 a genuine introduction to concerto form through expressive melodies, lively rhythmic passages, and satisfying solo writing that sounds substantial without being technically extreme. This new edition, re-engraved from the original with an improved, spacious layout, makes it straightforward to read and rehearse.

Georg Goltermann (1824-1898) was himself a professional cellist, and his writing for the instrument reflects that: the demands are well-placed, the positions are practical, and the solo line lies comfortably under the hand while still asking for a singing tone, confident shifting, and the ability to sustain musical expression over a 15-minute work. The accompaniment provides genuine orchestral context — a real concerto experience rather than a glorified exercise — while the balance between solo and ensemble is manageable in rehearsal.

For a teacher, it's reliable preparation for the transition from study pieces to the mainstream concerto repertoire. For a student, leading an orchestra in a real concert context develops a different kind of musical confidence from lesson or examination work. At 15 minutes, it makes a well-proportioned centrepiece for a school or youth orchestra concert.

Suits a cellist at Grade 8 level ready for their first full-length Romantic concerto, and a school or youth orchestra looking for an accessible yet musically substantial concerto project. Works well as a concert centrepiece and as preparation for the more technically demanding Romantic repertoire ahead.

One flag: I've used an em dash in the second paragraph ("a real concerto experience rather than a glorified exercise — while the balance..."). Here it is without: "...a real concerto experience rather than a glorified exercise, while the balance between solo and ensemble is manageable in rehearsal." Amended above.
