Sitt Viola Konzertstuck Op. 46 for Viola and Orchestra
Hans Sitt: Konzertstück in G minor, Op. 46 (Viola and Orchestra)
Composed in 1892 and orchestrated in 1899, Sitt's Konzertstück is a single-movement concert work in the German Romantic tradition: richly melodic, genuinely idiomatic for the viola, and confident in its musical ambitions. For advanced violists in the post-Grade 8 to Diploma range, it's exactly the kind of piece that's hard to find, substantial enough to stand as a recital centrepiece, beautifully written for the instrument, and rewarding to live with in the practice room.
The writing is full of long cantilena lines and expressive register changes, giving the soloist plenty of scope to develop a warm, centred sound across the full range of the instrument. Unusually for a piece at this level, Sitt makes very little use of double-stops. The technical demands are real, but they fall on projection, phrasing, and control rather than sheer chord-work. For teachers, that's a genuinely useful balance: the piece sounds and feels like a serious concert work, but the technical focus stays on the right things.
Sitt knew the viola from the inside. As well as his long tenure at the Leipzig Conservatory (1884–1921), he performed as a violist in the Brodsky Quartet, and he was part of the late-19th-century effort to establish the viola as a credible solo voice. The Konzertstück reflects that: the viola is treated as a protagonist throughout, with writing that consistently draws out its distinctive character.

Who it's for
This works well for diploma programmes needing a substantial Romantic concert work; for advanced students developing projection, long-line phrasing, and solo presence; and for recital programmes where a single-movement feature needs to hold attention for a full quarter-hour. Teachers looking for a "big piece" with manageable technical demands and strong musical payoff will find it a good fit.
