Arensky

Anton Arensky (1861–1906) was a Russian composer and pianist who studied with Rimsky-Korsakov at the St Petersburg Conservatory, graduating with the gold medal in 1882. He went straight to the Moscow Conservatory as one of its youngest professors, teaching harmony and counterpoint to Rachmaninoff, Scriabin and Glière, and became a close friend of Tchaikovsky. Rimsky-Korsakov predicted he would soon be forgotten; Tolstoy thought him the best of the new composers. His lyrical writing for violin, from the Violin Concerto Op. 54 to the Sérénade Op. 30 No. 2, now on the ABRSM Grade 7 syllabus, sits naturally in recital and exam programmes.
