Vitali
Tomaso Antonio Vitali (1663–1745) was an Italian violinist and composer, born in Bologna, the son of the violinist Giovanni Battista Vitali. He joined the Este court orchestra in Modena in 1675, aged twelve, later led it, and stayed in its service until 1742. His published music, mainly trio sonatas, is all for strings, and his pupils included Evaristo Felice Dall’Abaco and Jean-Baptiste Senaillé. His fame rests on one disputed piece: a Chaconne in G minor found in a Dresden manuscript headed “Parte del Tomaso Vitalino”, whose journeys into distant keys still divide scholars over who wrote it. Heifetz opened his 1917 Carnegie Hall debut with it, and in Charlier’s edition it remains a staple of advanced violin recitals.
