Friedrich II (Frederick the Great): Sinfonia in G major (New Edition for String Orchestra with Realised Harpsichord Part)

Frederick II of Prussia (1712-1786) is remembered primarily as a military strategist and statesman, but he was also a serious musician: a trained flautist who studied with Johann Joachim Quantz, a patron of the arts who brought C.P.E. Bach to his court, and a composer of genuine output that includes symphonies, flute concertos, and chamber works. His Sinfonia in G major is a product of that musical life, written in the elegant galant style of the mid-eighteenth century: clear melodic lines, transparent orchestral texture, and the formal clarity that marks early Classical writing at its best.

This is a new edition prepared from Frederick's original score rather than an arrangement: the orchestral writing is the composer's own. The distinguishing feature of this edition is the realised harpsichord continuo part. Like all music of this period, the original score includes a figured bass line that leaves the detail of the keyboard part to the player's improvisation. Here that figuring has been worked out in full, giving any competent harpsichordist a complete written part to read from without needing to realise the continuo in rehearsal.

The programme value of this piece goes beyond the music itself. A Sinfonia composed by one of the eighteenth century's most famous monarchs is a genuine conversation piece, and audiences who may not know the music will find the historical context immediately engaging. At ten minutes across three movements, it is a substantial concert work that sits comfortably in a programme of eighteenth-century repertoire.
