Goltermann Alla Pollacca Op 48 No 4 for Cello and String Orchestra
Goltermann: Alla Pollacca, Op. 48 No. 4 (Arr. Solo Cello and String Orchestra)
Goltermann's Alla Pollacca is the most celebrated movement of his 4 Morceaux caractéristiques, Op. 48. It's a Polonaise in character: a stately Polish dance in triple time with a distinctive rhythmic pattern that runs through the whole piece, and the technical challenge is as much about maintaining that dance character as managing the specific demands on each hand. This arrangement sets it for solo cello and string orchestra, expanding the original piano accompaniment to give the solo line a fuller, more dynamic backdrop.
At Grade 8, the technical demands are concentrated and specific. In the left hand, the piece requires a reliable map of the fingerboard: significant passages sit in the higher positions including thumb position, and several dramatic leaps from the lower strings into high thumb position need to arrive cleanly and confidently, with no searching for the pitch. Natural harmonics appear as both structural and decorative elements and must switch instantly from fully pressed notes without losing the tempo. The Polonaise style calls for ornaments throughout — grace notes, mordents, and triplets — that need a sparkling, light touch; anything heavy in the fingers makes the dance feel laboured. In the right hand, the main Polacca theme requires a crisp martelé stroke at the frog or mid-bow, while the faster developmental sections ask for a controlled spiccato to keep the character playful and light. Dynamic range is wide: the A major theme needs a heroic, projecting tone, and the middle section drops to a pianissimo that must remain clear rather than scratchy. Arpeggiated figures require a supple right wrist to cross strings smoothly without unwanted accents.
At five to six minutes, it makes a well-proportioned solo feature with strong audience appeal.
