Akimenko Eclogue Op. 12 for Viola and Piano
Akimenko: Eclogue, Op. 12 (New Edition, Viola and Piano)
Fyodor Akimenko studied with Rimsky-Korsakov and Lyadov, and the Eclogue Op. 12 sits firmly in the late Romantic Russian tradition: a pastoral piece with a flowing, lyrical melody that asks the violist to sustain a singing line with real warmth and emotional depth. At three minutes, it's concise. There's little room for the phrasing to be approximate.
The fast middle section introduces a different demand: a relaxed and flexible left hand. The contrast between that passage and the surrounding lyrical material is where much of the musical interest lies, and where a Grade 7 player has something specific to develop.
This new edition presents Akimenko's original score in a freshly engraved, clean text prepared for clarity and ease of use in practice and performance.
