Bull Nocturne Op. 2 for Violin and Orchestra
Ole Bull's Nocturne Op. 2 is a short piece that makes a strong impression: three minutes of sustained, singing violin writing with the warmth of a full orchestra behind it. Bull (1810–1880) was one of the great Romantic violin virtuosos, and the Nocturne distils what he did best into a compact, lyrical statement. This arrangement expands the original piano accompaniment to full orchestra, built from Bull's piano score with the harmonic structure preserved and the textures opened up across the full orchestral palette: woodwind, brass, timpani, and strings.
The solo part at Grade 8 asks for a specific kind of playing. Much of the melodic writing sits on the G string, using its rich, dark resonance to carry the Nocturne's expressive weight, and octave double stopping runs through the piece. Getting the G string to sing with real tone and projection, and producing clean, in-tune octaves with depth rather than tension, are both demanding skills at this level. The writing is not fast or technically acrobatic; the challenge is entirely one of tone production, intonation, and sustained expressive playing.
The full orchestral accompaniment, with flute, oboe, clarinets, bassoon, horns, trumpets, and timpani alongside strings, gives the piece a weight and colour that the piano version can't match, and at three minutes it works well as a concert opener, an encore, or a shorter solo feature within a larger programme.

Who it's for
This suits advanced student and semi-professional violinists looking for a shorter Romantic showpiece that can be performed with full orchestra. It works well as a solo feature in orchestral concerts and conservatoire programmes, and as an encore or concert opener where something lyrical and immediately accessible is needed. For teachers, the G string writing and octave double stopping make it a focused study in tone production and intonation at a level where those skills really matter.
