Vivaldi

Antonio Vivaldi (1678–1741) was ordained as a priest but rarely said Mass, citing a chest ailment, and spent the greater part of his career as violin teacher and composer-in-residence at the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice, an institution for orphaned, illegitimate, and abandoned girls. The concertos he wrote there were teaching pieces for his pupils, and his four hundred-plus concertos represent one of the most extensive bodies of educational string music ever produced. He died in poverty in Vienna, having sold his manuscripts to fund the journey, and was almost entirely forgotten until the twentieth century.
