The right hand does most of the work, carrying continuous semiquaver patterns through string crossings that require precise articulation and clean coordination between the hands. Getting the bow technique right at tempo takes real work, but the results arrive sooner than the notes suggest. This arrangement sets the piece for solo violin and string orchestra.

The middle section introduces mordants that sit very naturally under the left hand once the technique is understood. They look complicated at first sight and considerably less so once the hand has settled into them, which makes them a good introduction to Baroque ornamentation at this level: the reward is close enough to the challenge to keep it within reach.
