Jeanjean's Brillantes variations sur 'Le carnaval de Venise' takes one of the most famous themes in the variation literature,  familiar from Paganini's violin version among many others and puts it through a series of increasingly demanding clarinet variations, composed around 1900. This arrangement by Paul Wood sets the work for solo B♭ clarinet and string orchestra, replacing the original piano accompaniment with an orchestral part that adds harmonic depth without pulling focus from the solo line.

Jeanjean was himself a virtuoso clarinetist and principal with the Garde Républicaine Band, and the writing reflects that insider knowledge: each variation exploits a different aspect of the instrument's capabilities, from singing lyrical lines in the mid-register to fast scalar runs, wide leaps, and writing at the extremes of the clarinet's range.
