Massenet's Méditation is the orchestral intermezzo from his opera Thaïs (1894), played as the courtesan Thaïs contemplates abandoning her life of pleasure. It's one of the most sustained pieces of lyrical writing in the French Romantic repertoire: a long, soaring melody for solo violin over a gently moving string accompaniment. This arrangement by Paul Wood and Neil Crossland keeps the string orchestra backdrop but divides the famous melody between violin and cello, turning a solo feature into a dialogue between the two instruments.

The two solo parts sit at intermediate to advanced level, with demands that are primarily expressive rather than technical: sustained legato, consistent singing tone, controlled vibrato, and the ability to shape a long, slow phrase convincingly. What the duet version adds beyond the solo original is the element of listening and responding between the two players, matching tone quality and dynamic level across two different instruments, and creating a sense of musical conversation within a shared melodic line.

The string orchestra provides the atmospheric harmonic framework of the original, keeping the texture warm and supportive throughout.

At four minutes, it fits naturally into a concert programme as a lyrical centrepiece or an encore. The duet format gives it a distinctive character that the standard solo violin version doesn't have, and the combination of violin and cello timbres within a shared melody is an effective and unusual pairing.
