Porumbescu: Balada Op. 29 — New Edition (Violin and Piano)

Porumbescu's Balada Op. 29 is one of the most loved pieces in the Romanian violin repertoire: a long, singing melody with a distinctly Romanian romantic character, a more animated middle section, and a return to the lyrical theme that stays with you. This is a newly engraved edition of the original violin and piano version, with clean, well-spaced parts that are straightforward to read and annotate.

The solo part sits at around Grade 7. The lyrical opening calls for a long, singing bow, and some of the phrases sit naturally on the G string, where the extra warmth and depth of tone pay off. The middle section (poco più moto) shifts into faster semiquaver passages that test left-hand facility: clean, flexible fingers and a well-established left-hand setup are what this demands. It's not technically extreme, but the technique needs to be properly in place before the tempo becomes an issue.

At six to seven minutes, it's a practical length for examinations, local festivals, and studio recitals.

Key features

  • Instrumentation: Solo Violin and Piano
  • Difficulty: approximately ABRSM Grade 7 (violin)
  • Duration: approximately 6–7 minutes
  • Style focus: sustained lyrical playing, G-string tone production, left-hand facility in fast passages
  • Format: PDF download, full score and separate violin part

This suits Grade 7 violinists preparing for examinations, local festivals, and studio recitals where a full orchestra isn't available. Teachers will find the clean engraving easy to mark up with bowings and fingerings, and the separate violin part means the student can practise from their own copy independently.
