Porumbescu's Balada Op. 29 is one of the most loved pieces in the Romanian violin repertoire: a long, singing melody with a distinctly Romanian romantic character, a more animated middle section, and a return to the lyrical theme that stays with you. The solo part sits at around Grade 7. The lyrical opening calls for a long, singing bow, and some of the phrases sit naturally on the G string, where the extra warmth and depth of tone pay off.
