Wieniawski Reverie for Viola and String Orchestra
Wieniawski: Réverie for Viola and String Orchestra
Wieniawski's Réverie is one of his most intimate pieces: a single-movement work of sustained lyrical beauty, originally for violin and piano, that transfers naturally to the viola. This edition transcribes the solo part for viola and sets it with a string orchestra accompaniment expanded from the original piano part, a combination that suits the introspective character of the music and addresses a genuine gap in the viola solo repertoire.
The viola's darker, warmer tone is actually a good fit for this music. Where the violin brings brightness and projection to this kind of writing, the viola brings a quality that is inherently more melancholic and searching, which sits well with the Réverie's character. The technical demands are centred on tone production and bow control: long singing phrases that require a sustained legato, careful dynamic shaping over extended lines, and an expressive vibrato that varies in speed and width with the music. It is not a technically spectacular piece in the way Wieniawski's showpieces are, but it asks for a level of musical maturity and tonal refinement that places it firmly at Diploma standard.
The string orchestra provides a warm harmonic backdrop that supports without crowding the solo line. The parts are not demanding for the ensemble, and the players can direct their attention to tone and blend rather than technical difficulty.
At six minutes, the Réverie has the weight of a substantial slow movement. It works well as a lyrical counterbalance in a programme that includes more extrovert or technically demanding pieces, and is particularly effective in an intimate hall where the viola's resonance can be heard properly.

Who it's for
This works well for conservatoire and advanced student recitals where a deeply lyrical viola showpiece is needed, and for programmes where the viola's distinctive tone colour is the focus rather than a backdrop. Given the relative scarcity of quality viola solo repertoire with string orchestra accompaniment, it is a genuinely useful addition to any violist's library.
